EHT to start $2.2 million gabions project in West Atlantic City section

EGG HARBOR TOWNSHIP – Egg Harbor Township is moving forward with a $2.2 million project to further secure the coastline of West Atlantic City, which was badly damaged during Hurricane Sandy.

The project will install gabions along the dune from Toledo to Athens avenues, replace sand dunes, fencing, plantings and wooden walkovers and boardwalks along the stretch of the waterfront and install gabions and a concrete retaining wall from Cordova to Brenta avenues along the street edge of Bay Drive. Two wooden stair walkovers and one wooden ramp will be installed over these gabions, Township Engineer Peter Mott explained.

The 3-foot retaining wall to which the gabions will be attached will run nearly the length of Bay Drive, which Mott said is required so that the elevation of the gabions can meet requirements of being 8-feet tall at its peak.

The majority of the project will be funded by grants from the Federal Emergency Management Administration for a total of $1,666,921. The township share will be approximately $304,648, he said.

A public information session was held on Monday, May 5.  The work is expected to take 120 days.
