Gabions Surface Treaments

We manufacture and supply gabions in mainly four corrosion protection options: Hot dipped galvanized, pvc coated, aluminum coated (Galfan and Galmac).

Hot-dip galvanizing is the most widely used treatment due to the excellent corrosion resistance and cost-efficiency, PVC coating and Aluminum coating (Galfan or Galmac) coating provide enhanced corrosion resistance compared with galvanizing. Galfan coated and Galmac coated gabions are commonly pvc coated for particularly harsh environments.

We also supply electro galvanised gabions, epoxy coated gabions and stainless steel gabions, upon request of customers and for specialized applications.

Types of Corrosion Resistance Treatments for Wire Gabion Products

1. Hot-Dip Galvanization:
Hot-dip galvanizing is processed by dipping steel wire into molten zinc, creating a thick, durable coating that provides excellent protection against rust and corrosion. This method is highly effective and widely used due to its cost-effectiveness and long-term durability.

2. Electro-Galvanization:
Electro-galvanizing uses an electrochemical process to apply a thin, uniform layer of zinc to the steel wire. This coating offers less corrosion resistance compared to hot-dip galvanization. It is less popular in gabions production.

3. PVC Coating:
PVC coating is processed by applying a layer of polyvinyl chloride over galvanized steel wire, enhancing corrosion resistance and providing protection against UV radiation and abrasion. PVC coated gabions offer superior longevity, available in various colors, more expensive than galvanizing, can degrade over time with prolonged exposure to sunlight.

4. Galfan Coating:
Galfan coating is a kind of aluminum zinc coating, consisting of a zinc-aluminum alloy ( 95% zinc + 5% aluminum, or 90% zinc + 10% aluminum), including added mischmetal for improved performance. Galfan coated gabions offer superior corrosion resistance and better mechanical protection than standard zinc galvanizing. Galfan coated gabions are preferred in saltwater or industrial pollution area.
PVC coating is commonly applied to galfan coating.

5. Galmac Coating:
Galmac coating is a kind of aluminum zinc coating, similar to Galfan coating, 95% zinc and 5% aluminum, or 90% zinc + 10% aluminum, but no added mischmetal like in Galfan coating. Galmac coated gabions are more cost-effective due to simpler alloy composition compared with Galfan coated gabions.
PVC coating is commonly applied to Galmac coating.

6. Fusion Bonded Epoxy Coating:
Fusion bonded epoxy coating is processed by applying an epoxy powder to steel wire, then heated to form a protective layer. This coating provides excellent resistance to corrosion, chemicals, and physical damage, suitable for harsh environments. Epoxy coating costs higher than common pvc coating.

7. Stainless Steel:
Stainless steel gabions are inherently resistant to corrosion without the need for additional coatings. This material offers exceptional durability and strength, suitable for long-term applications in highly corrosive environments. However, stainless steel is significantly more expensive and heavier than coated steel.
