Gabions work is required for river bank, bed, shoulders, trenches, foundations, protection of the canals, embankments, water treatment, irrigation and etc.

Gabions shall consist of baskets, or mats, fabricated from wire mesh, filled with stone, connected together and anchored to the slope. Gabions refer to all those works made baskets having minimum thickness of 50 cm such as gabion slope protections, gabion scour protections, gabion retaining walls, gabion grayness and weirs.

Stone for filling the gabion shall be cleaned of adhering dirt and clay and shall be moistened. Stones shall be roughly arranged in close contact, Spaces between stones shall be filled with smaller stones of suitable sizes. Stone used shall be well graded between the sizes of 10 to 25 cm for gabions and 8 to 15 cm for mattresses and 70 percent shall exceed in least dimension the wire mesh opening if it used in some sites.

Cell Forms
Gabions are wire mesh boxes, cage containers, baskets or mattresses, filled with rocks to prevent soil erosion and to retain/contain soil particles. There are generally Four forms, baskets and box containers which are used for retaining walls and mattresses used mainly for revetments and river linings. Gabion mattresses are widely used in river courses where soil erosion is a problem over a wide flat area, hence known as flat gabions.

Cylindrical gabions of baskets / boxes / cages are mainly used in forms of gabion wall. They are now finding more uses.

Gabions wall are made by layer of containers made of hexagonal wire netting. Wire diameter varies with the hexagonal nettings. For hexagonal wire netting with no pvc coating, the wire diameter ranges from 2.0mm to 4.0mm. For those PVC coated hexagonal wire netting, the outside diameter ranges from 3.0mm to 4.0mm. The wire of the outside frame edge is one wire gauge thicker than the wire used for hexagonal wire netting. The gabion mesh has an opening smaller than rock / particle size.

Gabions, Structure
The mesh fabric is formed by weaving adjacent strands of wire by twisting them through one and a half turns at intervals, forming a hexagonal shaped mesh. The ends of the mesh wires are wrapped around a heavier transverse edge wire to form the panels. The tensile strength of the mesh in the direction of the weave is greater than across the weave.

The gabion box is manufactured from a main panel that forms the face, base, rear and lid of the unit. The side panels and diaphragms are then jointed to the base section of the main panel. The unit is then folded flat for transportation.

On site, the unit can be opened out into the required position and the sides, diaphragm and end panels are rotated vertically. The vertical joints are formed by a continuous lacing operation with the wire supplied or with 'C' rings to form the box shape. Once assembled the gabions are filled with stone or rock and the lid secured to form a monolithic structure.

Typical Mesh Mattress Specifications
Mattresses are popularly manufactured in mesh 60 x 80, edge wire 2.7 mm and mesh wire 2.2mm.
Rock mattresses are double twist hexagonal wire mesh baskets of variable sizes, uniformly partitioned into internal cells at typically 1m centres. All wire is mild steel and zinc coated by hot-dip galvanizing. All Reno The stone/rocks to be used shall be of similar specifications of Gabion works.

Rectangular Gabions
The wire mesh shall consist of steel wire galvanized in accordance with BS 443 and fabricated in double twist woven hexagonal shape with the maximum linear dimension and area of opening limited to 100 mm and 80 cm2 respectively. The wire making the mesh shall have minimum tensile strength of 400 kg. Gabion baskets shall be rectangular in shape with edge manufactured into a securely connected selvedge suitable for prevention of unraveling or to have ability to resist pulling apart at any of the twist or connections forming the wire mesh when a single wire strand in a section is cut.

When the gabion length exceeds its width, it shall be equally divided by diaphragms of the same mesh and material as the gabion body to form individual cells whose lengths do not exceed the width of the basket.

The stones/rock to be used shall be well shaped, hard, dense and durable whose individual pieces shall weigh between 7 and 70 kg of which seventy per cent shall be 20 kg or larger.

The specific gravity shall not be less that 2.2. The stones in contact with the wire mesh fabric shall have a minimum size of 150 mm and those in the middle of the unit shall have minimum size of 100 mm.

Trapezoidal Gabions

Formed from wire grid and welded at the intersections to give dimensionally stable mesh panels. The trapezoidal structure then forms straight gabion wall.

The trapezoidal gabion box is formed by hinging the face and back panels to the base panel and the lid to the rear panel with ‘C’ rings or clips. The unit is provided with preformed frames of the required shape that are fitted in the factory to the base panel and/or supplied loose for fixing on site.
